The innovative platform titled "GNOSIS" (Geographic INformatiOn System for Intelligent Transport Systems), developed by the KIOS research team, was presented during a workshop organized jointly by the Public Works Department (PWD) of the Ministry of Transport Communications and Works and the KIOS Research and Innovation Center of Excellence (KIOS CoE) at the University of Cyprus. “GNOSIS” is related to the management of the Cyprus road network and it is developed under the framework of the wider cooperation agreement between the PWD and KIOS CoE.

The workshop on the “GNOSIS” platform took place on the 10th of February 2020 at the University of Cyprus premises and participants included representatives and officers from the Ministry of Transport Communications and Works, Public Works Department, the Cyprus Police, and the Department of Lands and Surveys.

The “GNOSIS” platform is an integrated Geographic Information System that collects, stores, analyzes, and presents all data related to the Cyprus road network (such as road network topology, speed limits, signs, etc.), aiming to become a useful tool for the optimal management of data and decision making by the Public Works Department on the Cyprus road network.

It is expected that the platform will be completed by November 2020 and will consist of three interfaces: a software for desktops and a mobile app, which will be used by the personnel of the Public Works Department, as well as an open web portal through which citizens will be able to obtain information regarding the Cyprus road network.

The Executive Engineer of the Public Works Department, Mr. Aristotelis Savvas said that the development of this platform will definitely contribute to the modernization of the Department and thereby will improve the quality of services offered to the Cypriot citizens.

On behalf of the KIOS CoE, the Deputy Director, Prof. Christos Panayiotou mentioned that the Center pursues research and innovation collaborations with the Public Sector of Cyprus with the ultimate goal to transfer its expertise and know-how for the benefit of the society. “The collaboration between KIOS and the Public Works Department as well as the development of the “Gnosis” platform is a great example which reveals the exploitation of innovative Information and Communication Technology tools in public organizations for the improvement and enhancement of their operations”, he concluded.
