The project “AIRMOS - Artificially Intelligent Real-Time Drone Monitoring Tactics to Safeguard Sensitive Facilities”, by the KIOS Research and Innovation Center of Excellence (KIOS CoE) at the University of Cyprus was awarded the 2020 “Invest in the Commercialization of Entrepreneurship” award.

This new award for entrepreneurship was launched by Invest Cyprus, the national investment promotion agency, in collaboration with Cyprus Seeds, a non-profit organization that aims to help commercialize innovative academic research produced by Cypriot universities and research institutions. Through this award, the project received funding to participate in a five-month accelerator program for start-ups organized by the distinguished MIT Enterprise Forum Greece (MITEF) in Athens, Greece. This initiative constitutes an opportunity to promote Cyprus’ research and innovation ecosystem, and to enhance the creation of startups as well as the commercialization of Intellectual Property (IP).

The AIRMOS project by the KIOS CoE that was selected for funding under two consecutive Funding Cycles of the Cyprus Seeds Program for Research and Innovation, focuses on the implementation of intelligent real-time drone monitoring tactics to safeguard sensitive facilities. It acts complementary to existing approaches employed in the Security Services sector and addresses the growing scale and sophistication of threats by enhancing monitoring and response capabilities, enabling economies of scale and introducing higher security levels.

On behalf of the AIRMOS research team, Research Assistant Professor Panayiotis Kolios noted that the short-term goal is to move this innovative technology from the lab to the market and commercialize it, while the team’s long-term goal is to improve infrastructure protection and increase the impact of security research and innovation services.
