The KIOS Research and Innovation Center of Excellence (KIOS CoE) operates within the University of Cyprus and currently is a leading research and innovation center in Cyprus and the region on Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). The Center collaborates strategically with Imperial College, London, as well as with a plethora of local and international research organizations and other stakeholders.
The Center provides an inspiring environment for carrying out top-level research with emphasis on the Monitoring, Control, Management and Security of Critical Infrastructures, including power and energy systems, water, transportation and telecommunication networks, healthcare systems, as well as systems for emergency management and response. The goal of the Center is to conduct outstanding interdisciplinary research and innovation and produce new knowledge and tools that can be applied to solve real-life problems.
Since its establishment in 2008, the Center has been involved in more than 140 externally funded research and innovation projects and has received significant national and international recognition, as evidenced by important research grants, awards and distinctions (5 ERC Grants from the European Council, an EU Teaming Grant, an IEEE Frank Rosenblatt Award, an IEEE Neural Networks Pioneer Award, a National Experienced Researcher of the Year Award, multiple National New Researcher of the Year Awards, National Innovation & Entrepreneurship Awards), and several Best Paper Awards in top-tier international conferences and journals.
Key Achievements
- Awarded the prestigious ERC Synergy Grant – the 1st for Cyprus for the research project “Smart Water-Futures: Designing the Next Generation of Urban Drinking Water Systems”.
- Awarded the prestigious ERC Consolidator Grant "URANUS: Real-Time Urban Mobility Management via Intelligent UAV-based Sensing".
- Awarded funding (in excess of €40 million from EU and national sources) to develop a Center of Excellence in Cyprus in partnership with Imperial College, London, as part of the Horizon 2020 Spreading Excellence and Widening Participation - TEAMING program.
- Awarded the prestigious ERC Advanced Grant on “Fault-Adaptive Monitoring and Control of Complex Distributed Dynamical Systems”.
- Coordinated the COST Action IntelliCIS which has more than 30 partners (one of the largest COST Actions funded by the European Science Foundation).
- Received funding by the Strategic Infrastructure Program of the Research Promotion Foundation of Cyprus.
- Coordinated/participated in more than 140 national and international projects, with more than 70% of funding participation by the EU and the industry.
