The KIOS Research and Innovation Center of Excellence at the University of Cyprus announces one Special Scientist for Research (Post-Doctoral Researcher) position, for full-time employment. The successful candidate will conduct research under the supervision of Associate Professor Stelios Timotheou (https://www.eng.ucy.ac.cy/stimotheou/) towards the goals of the prestigious ERC Consolidator Grant entitled URANUS: “Real-Time Urban Mobility Management via Intelligent UAV-based Sensing”.
The required skills and expertise for the announced position include one or more of the following areas:
• Mathematical Optimization
• Systems and Control Theory
• Machine Learning
• Operation planning of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles
• Intelligent Transportation Systems/Traffic Management
Expertise in data-driven, model-free, large-scale and uncertainty-informed approaches in the above areas will be considered an advantage.

The KIOS Research and Innovation Center of Excellence is the largest research center at the University of Cyprus and in 2017 was upgraded to a European Research Center of Excellence through the KIOS CoE Teaming project. URANUS Project
URANUS is a 5-year, 2-million-euro ERC Consolidator Grant awarded to Associate Professor Stelios Timotheou that focuses on real-time, dynamic, and intelligent sensing of vehicular and pedestrian traffic via Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), and the use of the collected information for urban mobility management. In this context, a holistic framework for real-time urban mobility monitoring and control, as well as UAV operational planning, will be developed. URANUS is expected to transform our understanding of joint optimization of sensing, monitoring, and control, and lead to step-change improvements in urban traffic mobility with prominent environmental and socioeconomic benefits.

Candidate’s profile
The applicants should have a B.Sc. and/or an M.Sc. degree in Electrical and/or Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, or other relevant field, as well as a Ph.D. degree or equivalent in the subject areas from an accredited institution. The applicants should be able to work independently and/or in a team in fundamental and/or applied research in the aforementioned areas to produce, publish, and present research results in top quality conferences and journals. They should also be able to assist in the supervision of students, help with the preparation of reports and project deliverables, and possibly attend academic and/or other conferences and seminars for further personal and professional development.
Employment Terms:
The position is on a contract basis. Initially, a one-year contract will be offered, with a 6-month probation period, which is renewable based on performance. The gross monthly salary depends on the candidate’s qualifications and expertise and will be between €2200 – €3400. From this amount, employee contributions to the Cyprus government funds will be deducted. The 13th salary bonus is incorporated in the monthly salary. Maternity leave will be granted based on Maternity Protection Law 1997(Ν.100(Ι)/1997), and the existing amendment laws.

The applications should be submitted as soon as possible, but not later than April 26, 2024 at 5pm. The evaluation of the applications will commence immediately. At least the best three candidates that satisfy the required qualifications will be interviewed by the Selection Committee. Candidates will be informed of the result of their application by the KIOS CoE.
Applicants need not be citizens of the Republic of Cyprus. Applicants should however ensure, before applying, that in case they are selected they will be residing in Cyprus on a full-time basis during the employment period.
