Research Engineer – Transportation Research Infrastructure

The KIOS Research and Innovation Center of Excellence at the University of Cyprus announces one (1) Research Engineer position, focusing on Intelligent Transportation Research Infrastructure, for full-time employment. The successful candidate will conduct research, develop design, software and hardware a components and support on flagship projects related to connected autonomous robotic systems.

Who we are:
The KIOS Research and Innovation Center of Excellence is the largest research center at the University of Cyprus and in 2017 was upgraded to a European Research Center of Excellence through the KIOS CoE Teaming project. Currently, the Center employs more than 170 people who are supported by externally funded research and innovation projects. The KIOS CoE operates in a diverse environment as an equal opportunity employer.

Job Details
Duties and Responsibilities:
The successful candidate is expected to be trained and work on one of the following:

  • Design and develop small-scaled Connected Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs) able to perceive their environment and maneuver without collisions
  • Maintain and support the CAVs Infrastructure operation for Intelligent Transportation research
  • Implement AI algorithms for autonomous vehicle functionalities through the ROS operating system (including motion planning, decision-making, object detection, and collision-free coordination of multiple vehicles)
  • Develop and carry out performance evaluation tests in simulated and real-world environments with the small-scaled CAVs
  • Preparation and delivery of technical reports

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s and/or Master’s and/or PhD’s degree in Electrical/Computer/Mechanical Engineering or Computer Science or other relevant field from an accredited institution
  • Hands-on attitude and proven experience in applied research on connected and autonomous robotic systems
  • Expertise in programming with C++ and Python within the Linux environment
  • Expertise in developing and implementing machine learning/AI and Vision algorithms ideally for autonomous robotic systems
  • Expertise with autonomous systems and robotics software (e.g., ROS) is a plus
  • Experience in circuit design and 3D-printing is a plus
  • Previous experience in the area of ITS and ICT will be considered an advantage

Employment Terms:
The position is on a contract basis. Initially, a one-year contract will be offered, which is renewable based on performance. The gross monthly salary depends on the candidate’s qualifications and experience and will be between €1500 – €2500. From this amount, employee contributions to the Cyprus government funds will be deducted. The 13th salary bonus is incorporated in the monthly salary. Maternity leave will be granted based on Social Insurance Laws from 1980 until 2012.
