The SIGNAL-RES project aims to deliver a vital solution for energy market participation by both existing and future photovoltaic (PV) power plants in Cyprus.

The energy transition towards greater reliance on Renewable Energy Sources (RES), particularly PV plants, requires advanced energy management solutions capable of navigating the complexities of modern electricity markets. Current solutions in the market largely focus on optimizing individual asset performance (e.g., PV plants) or integrating energy storage to provide grid services such as frequency regulation, load shifting, and energy arbitrage. However, there remains a gap in fully integrated, modular systems that can provide end-to-end solutions for PV plants, enabling real-time market participation and dynamic interaction with both Transmission System Operator and Distribution System Operator infrastructures.

The SIGNAL-RES will develop an innovative Energy Management Platform as a holistic solution that combines both hardware and software aiming to enable the retrieval, storage and execution of dynamic market schedules and dispatch instructions delivered remotely from the Balance Responsible Parties (BRPs) accountable for each PV plant. This platform will act as an essential tool for all market participants as the imminent liberation of the energy market approaches in Cyprus.

The SIGNAL-RES project is expected to have a significant impact on accelerating the energy transition by facilitating the emergence of new market actors equipped with the necessary digital and operational functionalities to support a more decentralized, sustainable energy system. Through the development of innovative tools and platforms, SIGNAL-RES enables these actors to participate effectively in energy markets, thereby creating new revenue streams and lowering the total annual operational costs for delivering essential energy services.

The project is a collaboration between SVMENERGY NET LTD, a research SME and KIOS Center of Excellence at the University of Cyprus. By working together, the consortium partners will share expertise and develop new methodologies and applications that can be applied beyond the scope of this project.

The SIGNAL-RES project is supported by the Research and Innovation Foundation (RIF) of Cyprus through the “RESTART 2016–2020” Programmes for Research, Technological Development and Innovation. Funding has been provided under the Programme “Commercial Proof of Concept – Energy,” aiming to promote innovative energy solutions with commercial potential. The project is implemented under the RIF Proposal Number COM-CONCEPT-ENERGY/0624/0002.
