CLIMES Doctoral Network (DN) project, supported by the Research Executive Agency through a Horizon Europe Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action, focuses on training doctoral candidates in cutting-edge climate impact research, ranging from data science and epidemiology to engineering and urban sociology, to improve risk assessment, forecasting, and resilience. Equipped with AI tools and new data sets, the project’s overall goal is to help Europe adapt to a climate-changed future.
Heatwaves, floods, droughts, wildfires and compound climate extreme events are becoming more frequent and more severe in many regions across the globe. Their impacts cut across health systems, infrastructure, ecosystems, and societies at large, yet expertise to understand, predict and manage these impacts remain fragmented across disciplines.
The project combines interdisciplinary research with structured doctoral training to form experts capable of working across academia and the public, private, and third sectors, with a focus on:
- Improved compilation and use of climate impact data
- Innovative approaches to risk assessment
- Pushing the frontier of impact forecasting
The aim is to translate climate information into actionable knowledge for adaptation and resilience, thus strengthening Europe’s capacity to respond to climate risks.
CLIMES achieves excellence in research through an interdisciplinary approach bridging academia, the private, public and third sectors, fostering cross-pollination between research fields as diverse as climate science, urban sociology, electrical engineering, data science and epidemiology. This effort is timely and leverages newly-developed climate datasets and Artificial Intelligence tools to open unexplored avenues in the study of impacts of climate extremes.
The project brings together 10 partners from 8 countries across Europe as well as 17 associate partners from Europe and Africa. The project is coordinated by Uppsala University in Sweden.
