A delegation from the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works visited the KIOS CoE

A delegation from the Cyprus Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works, led by the Minister Mr. Alexis Vafeades, visited the KIOS CoE at the University of Cyprus, on the 9th of May 2023. The purpose of the meeting was for the delegation to be informed about the research and innovation activities undertaken at the Center and specifically about the ongoing research collaboration between the KIOS CoE and the Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Works on intelligent transportation systems.

The delegation comprised representatives from the Ministry, the Public Works Department, and the Electromechanical Services. The Rector of the University of Cyprus, Prof. Tasos Christofides, the Director and Deputy Director of the KIOS CoE, Prof. Marios Polycarpou and Christos Panayiotou as well as other KIOS Faculty members and researchers participated in the meeting.

During the visit, participants discussed the importance of research and innovation in the development of intelligent and sustainable transportation networks. The focus was on the ongoing research collaboration between the KIOS CoE and the Ministry, through which innovative technological solutions are being developed and used by the Ministry, contributing to the green and digital transformation of the transportation network. In addition, participants exchanged views on electrification of transportation and smart buildings with a focus on energy efficiency and air quality.

The delegation was welcomed by the Rector of the University of Cyprus, Prof. Tasos Christofides, who said that through the research collaboration agreement between the University and the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works, technological solutions are being developed to help the Ministry confront challenges related to transportation.

The Minister of Transport, Communications and Works, Mr. Alexis Vafeades, said that they look forward to a fruitful collaboration with the KIOS CoE, aiming to improve the quality of life of citizens.

On behalf of the KIOS CoE the Director Prof. Marios Polycarpou, said that the research collaboration agreement between the two parties has already produced positive outcomes and can be upgraded, since it can contribute to the efforts for the sustainable and digital transformation of the transport networks. The KIOS CoE, he added, has the expertise and the know-how to help the Ministry implement actions towards the green transition.
