The KIOS Center of Excellence for Research and Innovation at the University of Cyprus and the Famagusta District Local Government Organization (Famagusta DLGO) have signed a collaboration agreement to undertake research and innovation activities in the field of smart water networks. The agreement sets the foundation for a research project that aims to enhance the efficiency, reliability, and sustainability of the water supply network in the Famagusta district.
The agreement was signed by Dr. Marios Demetriades, Head of the Research and Innovation Support Service at the University of Cyprus, and the President of Famagusta DLGO, Mr. Yiannis Karoussos, on the 7th of August 2026.
Within this framework, the two parties will collaborate on:
- The use and analysis of available technical and operational data from the water supply network;
- A preliminary assessment of pressure zones and potential locations for installing or re-setting pressure-reducing valves across the network;
- The development of a reporting and data-monitoring system for water supply operations, incorporating dashboards and data-analysis tools;
- The development and validation of hydraulic models for selected pilot areas, using available pressure and flow measurements and ensuring compatibility with future integration into a Digital Twin;
- The evaluation, using the hydraulic models, of operational scenarios and potential pressure-management interventions in the selected pilot areas.
The core project will be implemented over nine months. Its outputs include technical reports, a reporting and monitoring system, dashboards and data-analysis tools, hydraulic models for selected pilot areas, and training for Famagusta DLGO personnel. The agreement also foresees annual follow-up research and technical-support activities aimed at supporting the continued operation of the reporting system and the further use of the data collected.
The President of Famagusta DLGO stated that the collaboration with the KIOS Center of Excellence creates the conditions for smarter, more efficient, and more sustainable management of the Famagusta district’s water supply network. “Through scientific documentation and data analysis, we strengthen our ability to make informed decisions for the benefit of consumers and the environment”, he added.
On behalf of KIOS CoE, its Director, Professor Christos Panayiotou, said that this collaboration is an important opportunity for the Center to translate its expertise and research experience in smart water systems into practical tools that support the operational needs of Famagusta DLGO and benefit the local community.
