The KIOS Research and Innovation Center of Excellence at the University of Cyprus announces one (1) Special Scientist for Research position (Research Engineer I), focusing on Computer Vision and Machine Learning, for full-time employment. The successful candidate will conduct research and development activities within the context of research and innovation, as well as provide technical and research support in the area of Information and Communication Technologies with emphasis on the monitoring, control and security of critical infrastructure systems. Additionally, will implement and/or support projects in order for the Center to achieve its strategic objectives.

Who we are:
The KIOS Research and Innovation Center of Excellence is the largest research center at the University of Cyprus and in 2017 was upgraded to a European Research Center of Excellence through the KIOS CoE Teaming project. Currently, the Center employs more than 170 people who are supported by externally funded research and innovation projects. The KIOS CoE operates in a diverse environment as an equal opportunity employer.

Job Details

Duties and Responsibilities:
The successful candidate is expected to work on the following:
• Participate in cutting-edge research and development of novel technologies and applications in Computer Vision and Machine Learning
• Participate in the dissemination of research results in conferences and journals
• Responsible for the implementation and testing of new solutions on mobile platforms such as drones
• Responsible for the optimization of existing solutions in terms of R&D and industrial applications
• Responsible for data collection, annotation, and preparation of datasets for release
• Work closely with other researchers and engineers within a team to develop solutions for various cases
• Prepare manuals and guidelines

Job specific knowledge and technical skills:
• Very good knowledge in one or more areas of vision/machine learning: deep neural networks, supervised learning, unsupervised learning, classification, object detection, recognition, segmentation, and tracking
• Knowledge/experience in software development using Python (SciPy, NumPy, OpenCV, Pillow, etc.)
• Knowledge/experience with development frameworks for machine learning such as TensorFlow/Keras and/or PyTorch
• Very good knowledge of the Greek and the English language

Qualifications and Experience:
• Bachelor’s and/or Master’s and/or Doctorate degree in Computer Science/Engineering or other relevant field from an accredited institution
• Previous experience in working with embedded platforms such as NVIDIA Jetson and/or Raspberry Pi will be considered an advantage
• Previous experience in working with LIDAR or other depth sensors will be considered an advantage

Employment Terms:
The position is on a contract basis. Initially, a one-year contract will be offered, which is renewable based on performance. The gross monthly salary depends on the candidate’s qualifications and experience and will be between €1500 – €2500. From this amount, employee contributions to the Cyprus government funds will be deducted. The 13th salary bonus is incorporated in the monthly salary. Maternity leave will be granted based on Maternity Protection Law 1997(Ν.100(Ι)/1997), and the existing amendment laws.
