The EU-funded 6G-VERSUS project leverages cutting-edge 6G research facilities across Europe to explore the frontiers of sustainable technology.
The global push for sustainability demands innovative solutions that blend technological progress with strategic experimentation. Achieving these outcomes not only requires advanced technology, but also its effective application across diverse industries. Environmental challenges across multiple sectors underscore the need for transformative methodologies that integrate efficiency and sustainability. In this context, the EU-funded 6G-VERSUS project harnesses cutting-edge 6G platforms across Europe to develop sustainable 6G applications.
Through meticulously designed trials and pilots, 6G-VERSUS addresses pressing challenges in five environmentally conscious vertical industries. Each of the pilot clusters (PC1-6) outlined below focuses on a unique use case, showcasing the versatility and potential of 6G technology:
- PC1 – Bulgaria: Testing an AI-driven optimization system for distributed renewable energy.
- PC2 – Greece: Running a collaborative robotics pilot for search and rescue operations.
- PC3 – Spain: Developing an immersive telepresence actuator for field operations.
- PC4 – Portugal: Focusing on sustainable and secure port infrastructures.
- PC5 – France: Exploring data-driven strategies for water and waste management.
- PC6 – Finland: Piloting an energy self-sustainable 5G base station.
The project will introduce a novel methodology, transforming existing use cases into 6G applications, comprising Vertical, Network, and AI-assisted APPs to improve data flow and decision-making.
By conducting trials in five environmentally conscious sectors, 6G-VERSUS will highlight the societal, economic, and environmental impact of 6G technologies, paving the way towards a sustainable future.
The 6G-VERSUS consortium brings together 34 partners from world class academia and research institutes, large industry players, telecom operators, NGOs and SMEs from 10 European countries. The project is led by the University of OULU, Finland.
