AURA: Air Quality Monitoring for Indoor Environments

aura_logo

The AURA project aims at improving the Indoor Air-Quality monitoring in large, energy efficient buildings and reducing the overall cost of the monitoring system by developing an innovative software.

During the last decade, over 100.000 deaths in Europe were caused by household (indoor) air pollution. This phenomenon occurs due to the high increase of the concentration of indoor air pollutants and the entrapment of various gasses indoors. These death cases and respiratory and cardiovascular health problems could have been avoided, if an Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) monitoring technology was widely available.

The developed software will be able to detect and localize the source of contaminant sources in the interior of the buildings and minimize at the same time the required sensing devices. In contrast to the available solution currently in the market, the AURA software utilizes state-of-the-art optimization techniques and model-based approaches that consider both the indoor structure and airflow.

The project’s results will enable the improvement the indoor air quality and they will ensure occupants’ health, productivity, safety and comfort. In addition the project will explore the software’s commercialization potential through the completion of a solid business plan and the demonstration in selected real indoor environments for attracting early adopters and investors.

This project’s partnership consists of the KIOS Research and Innovation Center of Excellence at the University of Cyprus, Cyprus University of Technology and LELANTUS INNOVATIONS, a startup company based in Cyprus, which develops innovative solutions for the estimation, monitoring and control for Intelligent Buildings.
