Domognostics+: Smart building systems for better monitor and control

domognostics

We spend 85-90% of our lives in buildings and require them to offer a comfortable and safe environment, as well as to be operated efficiently for economic reasons and compliance with EU and national regulations. As a result, most commercial buildings are already equipped with Building Automation Systems (BAS) and sub-systems that monitor and control heating, ventilation and air-conditioning as well as other parameters (as air quality, lighting, water distribution and security).

Today’s BAS solutions typically require pre-deployed devices and pre-designed monitoring and control intelligence. However, the emerging level of maturity of the Internet of Things paradigm, the subsequent proliferation and high penetration of smart portable and embedded devices (i.e. sensors, mobile devices, etc.) that can be deployed in buildings, turn the BAS market into a rapidly growing market.

Domognostics+ project aims to conduct industrial research, and develop and evaluate an innovative low-cost intelligent software/hardware solution designed for building operators to better monitor and control their building systems. This in turn will reduce their operational expenses due to systems’ inefficiencies or previously undetected events (i.e. water leakages, energy losses), based on state-of-the-art research-based data analytics, machine learning and artificial intelligence methods.

For this purpose, this project will produce the Domognostics+ platform, the Domognostics+ IoT gateway device, the SEMIoTICS Architecture and its Semantically-enhanced Supervisor, and the Smart Building app repository. The main output of the project will be a web Dashboard service provided to building operators with decision support, with focus on energy efficiency (energy wastes, water leakage detection) and human comfort.

The project’s results will have many societal, environmental and economic impacts, as the proposed system will improve the building operation systems, the monitoring of energy usage and the air quality; will reduce the energy waste and greenhouse gas emissions and costs due of energy losses. Moreover, this project will create job positions and cultivate the research and innovation culture through the production of scientific results.

The project’s partnership consists of the KIOS Research and Innovation Center of Excellence at the University of Cyprus, the SME PHOEBE Research and Innovation Ltd and the Cyprus Sustainable Tourism Initiative, which is a non-profit organization.
