VICTORIOUS (Innovative AI-Enhanced, Remotely Powered, Indirect Fire Observation System Utilising Unmanned Vehicles) aims to modernise and upgrade the fire support observation and threat detection of land operations through cutting-edge technology and innovative solutions.

Indirect fire support using artillery, mortars, and rockets is essential for engaging enemy targets beyond direct line of sight, typically hidden behind terrain or obstacles. This capability relies on forward observers – human “eyes and ears” on the ground – who identify targets and assess fire effectiveness for artillery units. However, human observers face critical limitations including vulnerability to enemy fire, communication challenges, restricted field of view, and high operational costs. VICTORIOUS addresses these challenges by developing a next-generation unmanned observation system specifically designed for artillery and indirect fire support. Using disruptive technologies and unmanned vehicles, the system aims to provide defense stakeholders with timely, accurate battlefield intelligence about target locations and combat events while eliminating the risks and limitations associated with human observers.

The project’s consortium brings together 12 leading industrial, research and academic partners from eight European countries, highlighting strong transnational cooperation in defence innovation. The KIOS Center of Excellence at the University of Cyprus participates in the project as a partner.
