The KIOS Research and Innovation Center of Excellence (KIOS CoE) had a strong presence at the 7th European Civil Protection Forum, organized by the European Commission’s DG ECHO, on 28 and 29 June 2022 in Brussels.

Under the general theme “Towards faster, greener and smarter emergency management”, the Forum aimed to bring together civil protection and disaster management communities from the European Union to exchange ideas and share best-practices on how to enhance their prevention and preparedness towards disasters and crises and protect citizens from new risks.

The KIOS CoE was selected by the European Commission’s DG ECHO to participate in the Forum’s exhibition, by sharing its experiences and disseminating the key outcomes of the projects AIDERS (Real-time Artificial Intelligence for Decision Support via RPAS Data Analytics) and ARTION (Disaster Management Artificial Intelligence Knowledge Network), which are both related to the use of Artificial Intelligence tools to improve Emergency Response.

Towards this end, KIOS CoE had a dedicated booth to demonstrate the novel AIDERS web-based platform that enables real-time analytics of emergency data for situational awareness and decision support. In addition, the ARTION project was presented as part of the DG ECHO Knowledge Network booth where researchers advocated on the use of AI algorithms in emergency management and showcased the Disaster Management AI portal that facilitates sharing of relevant material, knowledge, and best practices among interested stakeholders. For the purpose of this event, the KIOS CoE presented a short video focusing on the AIDERS project. The video is available here.

The 7th European Civil Protection Forum attracted more than 800 participants and included 5 plenaries, 12 workshops, 2 Labs and 1 exhibition addressing 4 policy areas related to civil protection: Strengthen Climate Resilience – Preparing for extreme weather events; Protect our Citizens – Adapting to new risks; Europe in the World – Reaching beyond geographical boundaries; Embrace Innovation & Digitalisation – Pooling our knowledge.
