KIOS CoE Director appointed Visiting Professor at Imperial College London

Marios Polycarpou, Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Director of the KIOS Research and Innovation Center of Excellence at the University of Cyprus has been appointed Visiting Professor in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Imperial College London, for the period 2019- 2022.

This honorary appointment is the outcome of Prof. Polycarpou’s broad international recognition in the field of intelligent systems and networks. During his appointment, he will have the opportunity to engage in research, teaching and training activities at Imperial College in the areas of adaptive and learning systems, fault diagnosis, computational intelligence and neural networks, and monitoring and control of large-scale and safety-critical systems. His extensive research experience will provide a valuable contribution to Imperial’s education and research programs.

Following a long academic career in the USA, Prof. Polycarpou joined the academic staff of the University of Cyprus in 2001 and was the first faculty member in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, where he served as Department Chair for seven years (2001-2008). Since 2008, he is the Director of the KIOS Research and Innovation Center of Excellence, the largest research center at the University of Cyprus. He has published over 350 articles in refereed journals, edited books and refereed conference proceedings, and co-authored 7 books. He is also the holder of 6 patents.

Prof. Polycarpou is the recipient of the 2016 IEEE Neural Networks Pioneer Award. He is a Fellow of IEEE and IFAC, and he received with his co-authors the 2014 Best Paper Award for the journal Building and Environment (Elsevier). He served as the President of the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society (2012-2013), as the President of the European Control Association (2017-2019), and as the Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks and Learning Systems (2004-2010).

He has participated in more than 70 research projects/grants, funded by several agencies and industry in Europe and the United States, including the prestigious European Research Council (ERC) Advanced Grant and the EU Teaming project. In 2019, Prof. Polycarpou was elected founding member of the Cyprus Academy of Sciences, Letters, and Arts.

Following his appointment, Prof. Polycarpou stated: “It is a great honor and privilege to be appointed Visiting Professor in one of the world’s best universities with a reputation for excellence in research and education.”
