Marios Polycarpou, Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Director of the KIOS Center of Excellence at the University of Cyprus, was honored with the prestigious 2023 IEEE Frank Rosenblatt Technical Field Award, which is the highest-level distinction for scientists conducting groundbreaking research in the field of Artificial Intelligence.
The award ceremony took place on July 2, 2024, in Japan, within the context of the IEEE World Congress on Computational Intelligence (IEEE WCCI 2024), which attracted more than 2,500 scientists from across the globe.
Following the award ceremony, Dr. Polycarpou, as the keynote speaker of the IEEE WCCI 2024, highlighted the significant role that Artificial Intelligence can play in the protection, security, and resilience of cyber-physical systems and critical infrastructures, such as energy, transportation, water networks, etc. These systems, due to their complex, interconnected, and interdependent nature, face various technical and operational challenges, as well as security issues, with a direct impact on citizens. In cases of emergencies, malfunctions, or cyber-attacks, Artificial Intelligence can contribute to the timely detection of problems. Finally, Professor Polycarpou discussed the design and analysis of intelligent monitoring methods for cyber-physical systems, which can contribute to shaping more resilient societies.
Frank Rosenblatt Technical Field Award
The Frank Rosenblatt Technical Field Award was established by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) in 2004, in honor of Frank Rosenblatt, who is regarded as one of the founders of neural networks. This annual award is given to internationally recognized scientists/researchers who contributed significantly to the advancement of the design, practice, techniques, or theory in neural networks, and Artificial Intelligence.
