The KIOS Research and Innovation Center of Excellence at the University of Cyprus made a strategic decision to dedicate resources and assist the Republic of Cyprus to effectively confront the Covid-19 (coronavirus) pandemic in Cyprus.
A KIOS team of volunteers (researchers, software engineers and PhD students) developed the “Emergency Management System for Handling Emergency Covid-19 Cases”, which is currently being utilized by the health professionals at the Ministry of Health, the Personal Doctors, the clinical labs and the 1420 hotline for recording and analyzing all incidents and managing the virus spread situation in Cyprus. This management system was developed by KIOS CoE in collaboration with the Cyprus Ministry of Health and the Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy and has been at the disposal of the State since March 15, 2020.
Subsequently, the KIOS team of volunteers developed an interactive “Web Portal for Information on the Spread of Covid-19 in Cyprus” which includes a map and dashboards that show how many cases were detected in each district and postal area, age and gender statistics, how many people were infected in general, how many were cured or died. The information on the map is taken from the “Emergency Management System for Handling Emergency Covid-19 Cases” and is updated every four hours.
According to a joint announcement by the Cyprus Health Ministry and the Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy, the “KIOS Emergency Management System for Handling Emergency Covid-19 Cases” contributes significantly in reducing the time for tracking suspected or confirmed cases of coronavirus in Cyprus.
