A demonstration of THISEAS system technologies to experts from the Ministry of Defence and the National Guard of Cyprus took place successfully, on 17 July 2023, at the University of Cyprus premises. The state-of-the-art technologies demonstrated are being developed within the context of the defence research project THISEAS and aim to improve the existing defence capabilities of the Cyprus National Guard as well as to develop new ones.
The THISEAS research project is co-funded by the Cyprus Ministry of Defence, within the framework of “ATHENA” Action, which supports defense research, innovation, and technological development. The main outcome of the project, which will be completed in October 2023, will be the development of an electronic situational awareness and decision support system. The project’s coordinator is the KIOS Research and Innovation Center of Excellence, and partners are the CYENS Center of Excellence and the SME companies SignalGenerix Ltd and Eight Bells Ltd.
The Head of Research and Innovation Unit of the Ministry of Defence, praised the collaboration between the project’s partners and referred to “ATHENA” Action, an initiative that aims to develop a research and innovation ecosystem in the field of defence and to support the capabilities of the Cyprus National Guard. This will be achieved through the implementation of THISEAS project.
On behalf of the KIOS Center of Excellence and the University of Cyprus, Professor Georgios Ellinas expressed his satisfaction for this synergy, through which scientific and technological excellence in the area of defence and security is being utilized. The technologies being developed through the THISEAS project, he added, can significantly improve the operational capabilities of the Cyprus National Guard so that can respond to modern day challenges for civil protection and defence.
