KIOS Research Lecturer Lenos Hadjidemetriou wins the Young Researcher Award

Cyprus Research Award LH 2022

Dr. Lenos Hadjidemetriou, Research Lecturer at the KIOS Research and Innovation Center of Excellence (KIOS CoE) of the University of Cyprus (UCY), has received the “2022 Cyprus Research Award – Young Researcher” from the Cyprus Research and Innovation Foundation, under the Physical Sciences and Engineering category.

His recent research work has focused on advancing the integration of renewable energy resources in smart grids by developing multifunctional inverters, flexible energy storage systems, and intelligent methods for active distribution grid management.

Dr. Hadjidemetriou holds a Diploma in Electrical and Computer Engineering (2010) from the National Technical University of Athens and a Ph.D. Degree in Electrical Engineering (2016) from the University of Cyprus. He has published more than 95 papers in scientific journals and international conference proceedings. He is currently involved in research and innovation projects funded by European and national funding agencies, such as OneNet, Smart5Grid, Electron, PVgnosis, EMPOWER, and WiseStorage. He is also working on industry funded projects in collaboration with the Electricity Authority of Cyprus, the Cyprus Transmission System Operator, and the Cyprus Energy Agency.

In addition, he has developed advanced research infrastructures for power systems in the University of Cyprus premises that are used for educational, research and innovation purposes. Furthermore, he has led the development of three-pilot demonstrations for energy storage systems (one with flywheel and two with battery storage systems) capable to provide flexibility and novel ancillary services to smart grids.

Dr. Lenos Hadjidemetriou was awarded this prize for his significant research contribution in the area of power systems, as he has published his work in distinguished scientific journals and in high-impact international conferences. His work has received international recognition indicated by the high number of citations received.

The Award Ceremony for the Cyprus Innovation and Research Awards 2022 took place on Friday, December 16th, 2022, at the Strovolos Municipal Theatre in Nicosia, during which the awards were presented by H.E. Annita Demetriou, President of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Cyprus. The event was co-organized by the Cyprus Research and Innovation Foundation and the Cyprus Employers & Industrialists Federation (OEB).
