The goal of the program is to encourage young talented students to engage in research and innovation
The KIOS Research and Innovation Center of Excellence of the University of Cyprus announces the selection of eight exceptional students to participate in the prestigious KIOS Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP), organized in the summer of 2018.
This is the 10th year that the UROP program has been running at the KIOS Center of Excellence. The program is extremely competitive, with a large number of applications being submitted every year by students from Cyprus and abroad. In the last two years, KIOS has accepted eight students instead of five that were selected in previous years.
The students taking part in the project this year are (in alphabetical order): Marie Georgiades, Marios Kelepeshis, Victor Kyriacou, Markos Loizou, Odysseas Sierepeklis, Demetris Skottis, Stavros Stavrinides and Evagoras Stylianou. Four of the selected students are studying at the University of Cyprus, while the other four are studying abroad (University of Cambridge – United Kingdom, University of Glasgow – Glasgow and University College of London-UCL – United Kingdom).
The selected students will have an opportunity to work with KIOS faculty and researchers on innovative research projects, which contribute to the advancement of knowledge in the field of Information and Communication Technology (ICT). The KIOS Center of Excellence undertakes research in several high-tech areas, with application for Intelligent transportation systems, smart water networks, next generation telecommunication systems and networks, power systems- smart grids and integration of renewable energy sources, robotics- embedded and IoT hardware and software systems as well as disaster management and health care/biomedical systems.
The UROP program at the KIOS Center of Excellence aims to promote excellence and encourage young talented students to engage in research and innovation, with the ultimate goal of upgrading the country’s competitiveness in education, innovation and entrepreneurship.
This type of program is modelled on international best-practice and is adopted in other prestigious academic institutions and research centers in order to encourage and develop the confidence of young talented students contribute to research and innovation.
The UROP program is now being implemented as part of the KIOS CoE Teaming project which involves the Center’s upgrade in to a Research and Innovation Center of Excellence. This effort is funded by the European Union and the Republic of Cyprus through Horizon 2020, WIDESPREAD-01-2016-2017-Teaming Phase 2.
